Administrative Office of the United States Courts

agency of the judicial branch responsible for carrying out the nonjudicial, administrative business of the federal courts, exclusive of the U.S. Supreme Court. Its functions include the supervision of court administrative personnel, the maintenance of court-related statistical data, and the disbursement of payroll and other funds. Working in consultation with the Judicial Conference of the United States, an important advisory and general-oversight body, the Administrative Office also exercises general supervision of federal probation officers, bankruptcy judges, magistrates, and public defender organizations. The Office was established in 1939.
